CRIME AGAINST WOMEN!
In India crime against women is not a new thing. It has been
witnessed right from the historical past in the form of events from Mahabharata
to Ramayana. This has sadly, time and
again showed that the patriarchy rules on women irrespective of what she
feels. Kidnapping, Murder, Domestic
violence, Gang-rape, rape, Abduction, Marital-rape, Sexual assault and the list
of crime goes on and on!
After being winked at by the security gunner of a Samajwadi Party,
Sadhvi Pandey a 23 year old woman jumped on the Mercedes, tore the party flag
on the car’s bonnet and smashed the windshield. How can one forget the famous
comments of Samjwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yaadav on being opposed to
capital punishment for rape, “Boys will be boys…they commit mistakes”.
Recently as reported in the Hindustan Times report, the Supreme
Court of India refused a woman’s plea to declare marital rape a criminal
offence, citing that the plea was for ‘personal cause and not a public cause’.
Marital rape refers to unwanted intercourse by a man with his wife obtained by
force, threat of force, or physical violence, or when she is unable to give
consent.
Justice Verma Committee after the Delhi rape case 2012 heeded the
demand to criminalise marital rape. But
the Indian government declined it as it has the “potential to destroy the
institution of marriage” and place the “entire family system under great
stress”.So whether a woman is single or married the crime against her is
bound to happen. It’s not just the increasing cynicism over the issue of crime
against women but one cannot deny the fact that it is happening on a regular
scale. The increasing number of crime against women in India has been shocking.
According to the CRIME IN INDIA 2013 Report, a total of 3,09,546 cases of crime
against women (both under various sections of IPC and SLL) were reported in the
country during the year 2013 as compared to the 2,44,270 in the year 2012, thus
showing an increase of 26.7% during the year 2013. States of Andhra Pradesh and
Uttar Pradesh remain the dark zones for the crimes against women.
Bollywood have not kept it away from highlighting the crime
against women. Hindi movies have highlighted these crimes and have successfully
cashed on such topics. For example, movies like Water and NH10. Thanks to the
brilliant acting performance by the actors which moved us into tears while
watching these movies.
The question lies in not how the government should react to such
incidents. That’s because we have the Indian Penal Code which respects women by
protecting it. The question is why such events have continued its existence
instead of laws, order, forces present to battle them? Why do we have such men
in our society who respects their wife’s and daughter at home but cannot
continue the same with the women walking on road? Why do we have growing
insensitivity towards female in this 21st century?
Many more questions are uprooted and they all have their roots in
our morality. Are we getting immoral day by day?
