Panch ka Punch!
(AUSTRALIA IS NOW FIVE
TIMES CRICKET WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS)
by Disha Mashelkar
Australia defeated
New Zealand in a not so thrilling finale by 7 wickets. New Zealand won the toss
and chose to bat first but succumbed to the splendid bowling by Mitchell Starc,
Mitchell Johnson and James Faulkner. New Zealand had put up a mediocre total of
183 runs on board which were produced thanks to the 111 runs partnership
between Grant Elliot (83 runs) and Ross Taylor (40 runs). At one point when New
Zealand was in a poor condition of 45 for the loss of 3 wickets many fans were
disappointed. But they knew that cricket is a game of uncertainty where
anything can happen. How can one forget that India had defended 183 score in
the 1983 World Cup final?
Australia took this
world cup by heart seriously and when the first wicket of Aaron Finch went to
Boult there was a flickering hope that New Zealand will not let it go easily!
But very soon India’s fate killer in the semi-final alias Steve Smith arrived
on field and as usual continued his splendid game by scoring 56 runs not out. David
Warner played some superb shots (45 runs) but fell prey to Matt Henry. Captain
Micahel Clarke who played his final ODI today scored 74 runs in 72 balls. The
team effort was visible to the eyes and as all could say Australia deserved to
win this one. This world cup was dedicated to the Australia’s teammate Phillip
Hughes who died of a bouncer which hit his head while playing a match.
Neither New Zealand’s
captain Brendon Maccullum nor highest runs scorer of this CWC 15 Martin Guptill
could save their team from the defeat and were ousted in no minutes. Australia
scored 186 in 33.1 overs. James Faulkner became Man of the Match while Mitchell
Starc became Man of the Series.
Indeed it was a
beautiful world cup which has established new standards in the cricket ODI
world. Upcoming next is the Twenty-20 IPL season 8 which begins from 8th
of April 2015. An interesting world cup season comes to an end today but the
next 2019 world cup will be played in the England and the isles country.
